INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

The Scouting Program

Add a description about this category

What is Scouts BSA?

Scouts BSA is the traditional Scouting experience for youth in the fifth grade through high school. Service, community engagement and leadership development become increasingly important parts of the program as youth lead their own activities and work their way toward earning Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.

So, what is the difference between Boy Scouts and Scouts BSA?

Absolutely nothing.

All of the requirements, standards, uniforms -- everything in the Scouting program is the same, regardless of whether the scout is a boy or girl.

Think about the 12 core elements of Scouting enshrined in the Scout Law.

Those are things young men and  young women should aspire to be:

trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

As a result, every requirement in Scouting --

from Scout to Eagle -- is the same.

Who can join?

Girls can join Scouts BSA and Troop 22 if they are between the ages of 11 and 17.  Girls that are 10 years old can join if they've earned the Cub Scout "Arrow of Light" Award (the highest award in Cub Scouting), OR if they've completed the fifth grade.

Meetings

We typically meet on Sunday afternoons, at 5:30pm in the Fellowship Hall

of Grace United Methodist Church, 901 Caruthers Avenue, in Cape Girardeau, MO.

(You'll want to come in off of Cordelia Ave, closer to McDonalds.)

Updates as to our meetings are posted on our Facebook Page.

COVID

All of our meetings are held in accordance within the requirements and guidelines of Scouts BSA, and the Greater St. Louis Area Council.  We also maintain an awareness of the current situation, and adapt our meeting and activities policy as new information comes out through the county, state and national health agencies.

Costs and Requirements

Add a description about this category

How much are annual dues?

We take the annual registration fees for the troop, and divide it up among the scouts of the troop.  On the average, it works out to be $85 or so per year.

There are also fees for campouts (usually the cost, divided by the number of scouts on the campout) and for summer camp.

(Please note -- if dues or fees stand in the way of your daughter benefiting from Scouts BSA, please let us know, and we'll work out an accomodation.)

Uniforms

  • Our "field uniform" (sometimes referred to as a "dress" or "Class A Uniform), one of the most recognizable part of a Scout consists of a shirt, pants/shorts, socks, plus a number of patches.  The shirt is the most critical, but eventually, you'll want a full uniform.  Total cost is about $150 for the complete uniform.
  • There are also t-shirts you can purchase from the troop that serve as our informal uniform during events and campouts.

What are some of the other financial costs of Scouting?

  • A copy of the Scouts BSA handbook, which can be purchased from the Scout Service Center, located on Gordonville Road in Cape Girardeau will cost about $18.
  • There are also fees for campouts (usually the cost of the campout, divided by the number of participants), and for summer camps.
  • And of course, there's personal camping items, like sleeping bags, flashlights, backpacks, pocketknife and rain gear.  More on that later.

Fundraising

We do participate in the annual Scouts BSA Popcorn sale, typically held every fall.  The funds raised by this event help us out greatly in financially supporting the troop, and help the girls reduce the cost of summer camp and other costs in being a Scout.

What else do we ask of parents of Troop 22?

While the girls lead and run the troop, the Scouting program would collapse without adult volunteer leaders helping us out, either as Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmasters (who frequently work directly with the girls), or as a member of the Troop Committee (who serve as an advisory board for the Troop, and help occasionally with the Scouts during events).

What we require of all our volunteers:

We require that all adult volunteers that work with the scouts of Troop 22 complete  the Youth Protection Training offered by Scouts BSA.

Additional training (both position specific and general leadership) is available through Scouts BSA.

All adult volunteers are subject to supervision by the Troop Committee, the Council (both volunteer and professional), and by our Chartering organization (Grace United Methodist Church).
